2011–2016 Ford Super Duty headlight installation

How the 2016 Super Duty owner’s manual and a 2011–2016 F-250 guide remove the grille to reach the headlight, and why the beam should be aimed afterward.

Professional installation is recommended. Fastener counts below are what a cited source describes, not a shop specification.

The 2016 Super Duty owner’s manual says to mark the grille, then remove it with the upper bolts and a flat screwdriver on the lower spring clips. The headlamp itself is held by four bolts. A 2011–2016 F-250 install video uses a 10 mm socket on four upper grille bolts. Rob Robinette’s 2012 notes say those lower clips are released with a long screwdriver from the top or the side, not by prying between the bumper and the grille. No cited page gives a torque. Do not scratch the radiator support.

Does the bumper or the grille have to come off?

The grille comes off. The stock front bumper does not, in the procedures that replace the housing. The 2016 owner’s manual steps are: open the hood, mark one grille bracket against the radiator support, remove the two grille-to-headlamp push pins and the four bolts that hold the top of the grille, pull the top of the grille forward, depress the lower spring clips with a flat screwdriver, pull the grille straight out, remove the four bolts from the headlamp, pull the assembly out of one snap clip at the fender, and unplug the connector.

That video follows that shape for 2011–2016: four 10 mm bolts on the grille, clips along the bottom, grille off, then the lamps. The page’s year list includes 2011–2016 F-250, F-350, and F-550. This shop’s pair is listed for F-250, F-350, F-450, and F-550. The owner’s manual excerpt is the Super Duty procedure, and the video list we could read names F-250, F-350, and F-550. Treat an F-450 as the same generation only after the bolts in front of you match. Do not assume a one-ton and a chassis cab hide the fasteners in the same place if an aftermarket bumper is installed.

A Texas Bowhunter thread about a 2012 and a 2015 with an aftermarket bumper says the housing can still come out with that bumper on, if a thin extension reaches the lower headlight bolt, and that the grille still has to come off. That is owner experience with an aftermarket bumper, not the owner’s manual. If the bumper wraps the lamp so tightly that the bolts are blocked, stop.

General steps

Switch the lamps off and open the hood. Tape the grille alignment before any bolt comes out. Remove the push pins and the upper grille bolts, release the lower clips from above or from the side, and lift the grille down carefully. Robinette notes that the plastic grille is heavier than it looks. Remove the four headlamp bolts, pull the housing out of the fender clip, and squeeze the connector tab to unplug it.

Our Super Duty pair does not include bulbs, so move the original bulbs across without touching the glass. The 2016 manual says a halogen bulb that was touched should be cleaned with rubbing alcohol, and that bulbs are hot after use. Seat the new housing, install the four bolts, reconnect the plug, and put the grille back on the alignment mark. Test high beam, low beam, and the turn signals.

Aiming after the install

The 2016 Super Duty owner’s manual has a headlamp aiming section. The page we read titles a target at 8 feet (2.4 meters). That is the manual’s figure, not a complete aiming procedure, and this guide does not redraw the diagram. The installer in that video talks about checking the beam on a board and says a realistic distance is longer than the few feet in the video. Use the manual’s method or a shop’s aiming equipment. Do not drive the truck at night until the cutoff looks level and the left side is not glaring into oncoming lanes.

Why a professional install is the better default

A grille that goes back off its mark sits crooked, and the housing can look installed while the beam is still off. An aftermarket bumper changes the access. We recommend a shop unless you have the manual’s aiming setup and you are comfortable with those clips.
