2009–2014 Ford F-150 headlight installation
How a 2009–2014 Ford F-150 headlight housing comes out, what tools published guides use, and why the aim should be checked after the lamps are in.
Professional installation is recommended. Fastener counts below are what a cited source describes, not a shop specification.
Tools published guides use
Illustrated instructions for a 2009–2014 F-150 headlight housing use a 10 mm socket with a ratchet and a Phillips screwdriver. Paul Strauss’s photo guide lists the Phillips screwdriver for the plastic screw in the rubber flap, and the 10 mm socket for the housing bolts. An aftermarket sheet for these years also starts by disconnecting the battery, because that sheet is written for lamps with an added harness. None of these sources publish a torque, so this guide does not either.
Does the bumper or the grille have to come off?
For a headlight housing on a 2009–2014 F-150, the sources below do not remove the front bumper or the grille. The forum post that copies the owner’s manual says to open the hood, remove the push pin that holds the air deflector at the upper inboard corner, loosen three retaining bolts (two at the top of the lamp and one at the lower inboard corner), then slide the assembly forward off two snap attachments at the fender. A reply in that same thread says the bumper stays on: the job is those bolts and a straight pull, after folding the rubber flap back from the front-facing bolt.
Paul Strauss’s guide describes the same layout in more detail: one Phillips screw and the rubber flap, two 10 mm bolts on top, and a third 10 mm bolt on the inner front edge, then a pull that releases pegs and friction fasteners on the outer edge. Another sheet hosted at lowriders.ca also says to pull two push pins on the protective cover and then three 10 mm bolts, two on top and one in the middle, and to pull the housing outward. A CarParts.com bumper-cover tutorial for this generation removes the headlights as their own step before the bumper comes off, which matches the idea that the lamps are not trapped behind the bumper cover.
Factory xenon trucks are a different lamp. The shop listing says it will not fit factory xenon. Confirm the truck before you start. If an aftermarket bumper blocks the inner bolt, stop and have a shop look at it. That case is not what the stock-bumper guides describe.
General steps
Park on level ground, switch the lamps off, and open the hood. Disconnecting the negative battery terminal is the first step on the aftermarket sheet, and it is a reasonable precaution before you unplug connectors. Remove the cover fastener, move the flap, and take out the housing bolts the sources describe. Pull the housing straight forward. If it hangs up, the forum advice is to keep pulling straight rather than prying on the lens.
Unplug the connectors and, if the new housings do not include bulbs, move the sockets across. Our F-150 pair does not include bulbs, so the stock bulbs, sockets, and wiring stay with the truck. Seat the new housing on the locating pins, reconnect the plugs, and put the bolts and the cover fastener back. Check high beam, low beam, and the turn signal before you close the hood.
Aiming after the install
None of the F-150 housing guides cited here give an aiming distance, a beam height, or a torque for the adjusters. Taking the bolts out and pulling the housing off its pins can change where the beam lands, even when you reuse the same adjuster position. Have the aim checked so the beam lights the road without glaring at oncoming traffic. A body shop or a shop with an aiming board is the right place for that check.
Why a professional install is the better default
Several owners on the F-150 forum did this in a driveway, and the same thread says the first pull can be stubborn. A cracked lens or a beam that sits too high costs more than the labor. We recommend a body shop or a mechanic unless you have done this housing before and you can get the aim checked the same day.
